Story: Winner 2013 Silver Bear (Alfred Bauer Prize) Berlin International Film Festival. Vic + Flow Saw a Bear is a darkly mysterious tale of lesbian two ex-cons, Victoria and Florence, trying to make a new life in the backwoods of Quebec. Seeking peace and quite, the couple the slowly begin to feel under siege as Vic's probation office keeps unexpectedly popping up and a strange woman in the neighborhood soon turns out to be an increasingly menacing shadow from Flo's past. With it's collection of complex and eccentric characters, unexpected plot twists and unsettling humor, director Denis Cote (Curling, Bestiaire) has created an original film that is as once traumatizing, uplifting, and utterly breathless. Canadian screenwriter, producer and director Denis Côté's fifth featurefilm which he wrote, premiered in Canada, was screened In competitionat the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival in 2013, was shot onlocation in Canada and is a Canadian production which was produced byproducers Sylvain Corbeil and Stéphanie Morissette. It tells the storyabout a middle-aged woman named Victoria Champagne who after havingmoved in with her infirm uncle named Émile who lives in a house in aforest and began tending his garden meets a probation officer namedGuillaume who has a lot of questions about her reasons for being thereand is visited by a woman named Florence Richemont.
Distinctly and brilliantly directed by Canadian filmmaker Denis Côté,this rhythmic fictional tale which is narrated from multipleviewpoints, draws a reflective portrayal of a woman's relationship withher past, society, other people and a younger woman. While notable forit's naturalistic and atmospheric milieu depictions, sterling andlow-keyed art direction by art director Colombe Raby, distinctcinematography by cinematographer Ian Lagarde and use of colors, thisnarrative-driven story about the prospects of two women with unknownbackgrounds which is an exemplary piece of artistic cinema depicts twoenigmatic and interrelated studies of character and contains aprominent instrumental score by composer Melissa Lavergne.
This psychological, surreal and cinematographic indie which is setduring an autumn in Canada in the 21st century, is impelled andreinforced by it's brilliant narrative structure, subtle characterdevelopment and continuity, sparse dialog, rare humor, interrelatedrealities, esoteric characters, efficient use of sound, aura of mysticand the understated and fine acting performances by Québécuois actressPierette Robitaille, French actress Romane Bohringer, Canadian actorMarc-Andre Grondin and Quebec actress Maria Brassard. A quiet anduncanny love-story and a remarkably captivating mystery which gainedthe Alfred Bauer Prize at the 63rd Berlin Film Festival in 2013.

I saw this film at the Berlinale 2013, where is was part of theofficial Competition. The story line is an achievement in itself,because of mixing an intriguing story together with intriguingcharacters. Throwing in a parole officer who pops up every now andthen, plus some people out of the past with an ax to grind, plus aremote cottage far away from everyone, all this combined creates asetting for an interesting story. All the time it keeps you wonderingwhat will happen next, with hidden agenda's all around. Even a friendlywoman who offers to help with the garden, cannot be trusted, so itseems.
It is next to impossible condensing the story here in a few sentences.Moreover, I think it is counter productive to reveal too much of whatis going to happen. Lean back and wait for several surprises. (***warning *** spoiler ahead***) Pity that it ended so miserably for thetwo main characters.
After the Berlinale festival I learned that this film received theAlfred Bauer Prize (Silver Bear), (start quote) "awarded in memory ofthe Festival Founder, for a feature film that opens new perspectives"(end quote). I'm not sure I concur, due to my failure to feel witheither one of the characters involved. This may be my fault, of course,but it gets in the way of recommending this film without anyhesitation. Still, a remarkable piece of work, augmented with greatcasting and acting all along.
